Radio Heatherwood Backstage 1996

Whilst there was a very public side to the promotion of the radio service, behind the scenes a number of other events and changes were taking place to the working practices of the radio station.
Some captured moments of our volunteers.
To celebrate the completion of room with a view a special 12 hour broadcast was put together for transmission on November 4th in 1995.
In 1996 it was decided that another twelve hour broadcast should take place again. This time it was held on November 2nd. All the usual suspects offered their time.
On the 12 hour broadcast day, one nice man was asked “would you like a request” his reply “yes can you shoot Bill Haley he ruined British music”.
Sylvia Hayward on ward 4 won the gift voucher which was given away as a prize during the special broadcast day. On the following Tuesday she donated £10 for a loan radio.
The loan radio service was an integral part of the radio's promotion and service on the wards.
This year we received 8 radio's sponsors and a number of donations for replacement batteries.
The year also produced sales of over 498 batteries.
What was evident as the year progressed was a number of radio's were missing.
The original radio's were yellow in colour but from this point onwards we introduced pink blue and black radios.
1996 was a very busy year for the station management and as the year unfolded there was much to do and organise

The Radio Heatherwood supporters group organised by the station manager Dave Smith was still an integral part of the fundraising for the station.
Eight days trips were organised through the year plus two holidays of which the May holiday was to Ilfracoombe and the November mini break took in the sites of Newquay.
The charity buzz had raised £7000 over the last ten years.
The charity buzz prompted a design of a new mug which was then
distributed on the wards during 1996 & 1997.
The logo was
also carried on the back page of the ward booklet
This has seemed a very strange year for David and I, as goals previously driving us on have been completed: with the last of the studio changes completed in the previous July. This is not to say we have lost interest in the way the station develops. On the contrary we are very much concerned for the stations future and see that new trainees are encouraged to join and encouraged to develop ideas previously un-obtainable. These are the people who will help drive and ensure a strong future for the station.
The studios have been evolving to the stage of their current status apart from some minor wring changes under the consoles, no changes are planned in the foreseeable future.
The wards continue to bring headaches for us as we don't know just where or when our service may be disrupted or changed.
New fund-raising ideas must be forthcoming and implemented if we are to remain buoyant financially. New equipment will be purchased as current units become worn out( Subject to financial viability ).Areas previously glossed over will receive deeper scrutiny and we will continue to ensure that the voice of Radio Heatherwood is heard with the hospital trust
The future for Radio Heatherwood depends on the collective support and ideas of the presenters. There are lots of new and interesting ideas out there which need nurturing and developing. We either take on board new ideas or we stagnate.
The management team would like to thank all staff for their splendid support in 1996 and thank you for your contributions to the service which as I'm sure you know is very much appreciated by those patients listening on the loan radio service.
Long Live the AM Service.
P. J. Davidson-Smith Secretary December 1996
