Radio Heatherwood Backstage 2001
Whilst there was a very public side to the promotion of the radio service, behind the scenes a number of other events and changes were taking place to the working practices of the radio station.
Whilst there was a very public side to the promotion of the radio service, behind the scenes a number of other events and changes were taking place to the working practices of the radio station.
League chairman Roy Ryman nominated Dave Smith and PJ Davidson-Smith after the efforts made in re-locating the radio studio.
CATEGORY 2 (VOLUNTARY GROUPS)
AWARDED CERTIFICATE:- Mr David Smith, Mr Peter Davidson-Smith
Reason for Nomination:-
Over a period of at least 15-20 years David Smith and his brother Peter Davidson-Smith have worked voluntarily and tirelessly far exceeding the call of duty for the League of Friends Heatherwood and particularly Radio Heatherwood. Radio Heatherwood provides an excellent service to all patients hospitalized for whatever reason in our area and beyond.
Both David and Peter have full time work and give up an awful lot of their leisure time to this pursuit and ask nothing in return.
David is Treasurer of the League of Friends and also Manager of Radio Heatherwood.
Peter is also Secretary of the League of Friends and is Engineer at the Heatherwood Radio Station.Recently a radio station removal has taken place at Heatherwood resulting in an upheaval and expense for the League, and the cost has been greatly reduced by the work and expertise of David and Peter who are totally committed to this organization.
Over the past ten years, the League of Friends have donated some several thousands of pounds to Heatherwood for the purchase of medical equipment and other purposes, and without the help of David and Peter this would not have been possible.
Footnote:- At the discussions after the main presentations, it was overheard a lady says “ why is the parish council supporting the hospital and these type of people”?.
At the end of 1999 the Low Power AM project was put on hold as the hospital informed the league the radio station would have to move.
Although we were more or less consigned to the fact that the service was all but dead, it didn't stop us from revising the project folders and adding pages to the web site in an attempt to perhaps influence someone within the hospital who might feel this was a good idea.
Radio FutureIn addition a power point presentation was compiled on the future for Radio Heatherwood which detailed the LPAM and introduction of the twenty four hour service.
Low Power AM Project Folder 2001On the official opening of the new studio's copies of the project were available for visitors to take.
One of the mini-disc players was replaced this year with a new updated version from Sony.
This however demanded a new instruction sheet for presenters, this was provided and laminated and aided users on which buttons etc should be pressed.
Back to TopThe wave database was revamped in July this year and was now in version 2.
The photo here shows the summary of the files ready to be used in the new 24 hour broadcast computer.
At this point over 8000 items are available for the new system.
The twenty four hour automated service using computers was developed further this year.
The twenty four hour service was first looked at in 1999 when the station was looking at low power AM.
The station secretary spent some time in Wexham as a patient and having realized that the option to listen to a music service, which would be more suitable for inpatients of hospitals was not available from the box standard stations available at the end of the bed.
The leaflet available here was produced with the view to raise funds for the service.
On the official opening of the studios in June the production area carried version one of these leaflets.
A power point presentation was compiled for the promotion of the 24 hour service.
Power Point PresentationIn support of the project, web site pages were added to detail our intentions.
Extract from AGM report 2001/2002
The first task after my return from my sick bed was to submit a
request to the Ascot Authority for assistance with the 24 hour
project. This however proved fruitless with the authority not even
communicating with us; that we were not successful.
We found out
through the local press. This hasn't deterred us from getting this
project off the ground, further work has been carried out throughout
the year and we would hope in our report for 2002/3 to be able to
confirm it’s implementation.
Emails were produced detailing all the software and how we would integrate the computers into our programs. This was briefed out to all staff.
Staff were asked this year, what should we call the service ?
In October the station engineer sets up his old PC in the studio to demonstrate the use of the software and promote the automated system of broadcasting.
Demo Software Program GuideAn information leaflet on the demo software is available to help presenters get to grips with the new software etc.
Wavestation was the software chosen to deliver the 24 hour service. The company changed the name of the software in October 2001. The new version was named Simian.

Some captured moments of our volunteers, during this year.
2001 was a very busy year for the station management and as the year unfolded there was much to do and organise

That was the year that was 2001
As the year draws to a close, the current staffing crisis on the station is not how we would have wished the year would end. In the words of her majesty it's been a crap year for me personally( can't say the posh Latin ). The forced sickness has devastated my personal commitments and has had a profound effect on my future.
There was a lot of things which I had hoped to get off the ground this year but I have had to put them on ice.
The success of the year has to be the completion of the studio move and the celebration of 25 years of Radio Heatherwood.
We have had some good feedback from patients this year and this is credit too everyone.
I want to take this opportunity to say a big big thankyou to everyone for their support and kind words during the past year.
Have A Super Christmas and A Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best Wishes
P. J. Davidson-Smith Secretary December 2001
