One of the most talked about events of the year was the sweethearts ball. Tom Beaumont son of Captain Beaumont of the Racecourse and Roger Hawkes with assistance of other members of the radio spent a lot of time and effort into making this a success.

The event staged on Friday 12th February 1993 at the racecourse was attended by over 200 people. Live music, disco, a fish supper and wine all provided an evening of romance.

Below is the staff news letter report which appeared in March edition 1993.

Sweethearts Ball Staff Newsletter Report

Caterers Letherby & Christopher deserve a huge note of thanks from us all for the excellent food for which they charged us only a fraction of the actual cost, they also provided bar staff waitresses and assistants at no extra cost. On conclusion of the event, bar takings had been so good they donated back £206:59p to our efforts.

A bouquet was presented to Margaret Ferguson for her help and companionship she has given to many of us during our time at Heatherwood.

Mrs Ada Hawkes and Mrs Dot Fishenden raised £175 on the night selling raffle tickets.

In the absence of the secretary and the manager Gordon Young studio manager thanked everyone for attending, what he thought had been, a most successful evening and a wonderful PR exercise for the station.

Vanda Hird won the best dressed female & Mr Walters won the prize for the best dressed male.

Two hundred people attended a wonderful evening and Tom & Roger received numerous letters/cards of thanks and praise for such a good night.

The total profit was £877. A staggering amount for the first venture of it's kind.

Sweethearts Ball 2 Lovers Revenge

( Yes that's how it was promoted )

Following on from the success of the first ball, Roger & Tom were making plans for the next one.

The following story appeared in the November staff newsletter:-

Following the huge success of last years Sweethearts ball the organisers Tom Beaumont and Roger Hawkes have decided to stage another ball on Friday February 11 1994. at the paddock restaurant Ascot racecourse.

So why are we writing to you now before Christmas ? well as I'm sure you realise during December and early January nobody wants to make plans for anything other than Christmas and new year celebrations. In order to be well on the way to a good function the ground work needs to be done Now- after January 1, it is only five weeks to plan and arrange everything.

The ticket price this year will be £8 each which will include fish chips, or chicken & chips plus a sweet and a free glass of wine. The services of Mark Porch and his “strolling players” “skint til Pay-day ” will be the local band providing a varied music choice. The disco “ Big Sound experience” with Ricky rhythm should once again provide a contrast of entertainment to suit all tastes.

There will only be 220 approx, tickets available. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed couple and raffle/ Tombola prizes will be available. The success of the ball will depend on a contribution by everyone. We need prizes for the raffle if you have an unwanted gift, last years Christmas presents etc. remember to donate them to the ball. If every presenter could find two prizes we would have 32+

Posters and information sheets etc. will be available from mid December.

We only have five weeks to sell the idea so every poster placed; where you work , could help. families and friends are always an untapped source of help.

Above all the plan is to increase our profit this year and have a good time.

If you have any ideas contact Roger & Tom.
